![]() Other nudity-related bartender arrests at the tavern were in October 2009 and October 2008, involving total nudity or an employee revealing her breasts to customers. All five men involved in the melee were from outside the city. Last October, an Alton police officer broke his hand while trying to break up a fight outside the Pub Room. The order says Sansone was not present at the time of the incident, when police said she "exposed herself for money," and he fired Barnett after her arrest. Barnett was charged with two misdemeanor counts of violating the city's lewd entertainment ordinance at the tavern. The incident at the heart of the order was the arrest of Pub Room's former barmaid, Melissa N. "We needed something to start with," he said. ![]() If there had been a history of penalties on the bar, Hoechst said he might have imposed a harsher order on the business. While there have been other arrests for nudity at the bar in recent years, Hoechst said he could not find evidence that the previous mayor-liquor commissioner Don Sandidge had imposed any penalties on The Pub Room. "We are not going to put up with this," the mayor said about nudity in Alton bars. 7 that he was moving ahead with a decision because Sansone "can't make it to (hearing) court," and issued the order. "Further, to my knowledge, no further alleged violations or citations are pending since the filing of this complaint," Selby's letter concludes. Regarding the more recent hearing date, Selby wrote a letter to Alton Corporation Counsel Jim Schrempf, calling it a motion to continue the hearing, because of his client's treatments for an illness, and his "inability to prepare and confer with counsel." Hoechst issued the order last Tuesday with no hearing after Selby had public hearings on the matter - scheduled for July 15 and Sept. His attorney, Steve Selby of Alton, did not return a reporter's telephone message to clarify Sansone's intentions, to comment on the mayor's order or the incident. Sansone has the right to appeal the fine to the Illinois Liquor Control Commission, but he signed the order that says, "the licensee will accept the determination of the local liquor control commissioner as to an appropriate fine and suspension imposed as a result of the actions occurring within the licensed premises by an employee of the licensee." Last fall, Hoechst sent letters to all Alton liquor license holders warning them he would strongly enforce the city ordinances, including those against nudity. "(It) should be interpreted as fair warning to each liquor license holder that violation of the prohibition of lewd entertainment, as set forth in the City Code of the City of Alton, Illinois 4-4-13B, will not be tolerated," the mayor said. Hoechst, who also is the city's liquor control commissioner, said he plans to send a notice to all other liquor license holders in the city to notify them of the penalty he imposed on the bar. ![]() Hoechst said he allowed Sansone to select the date to close the bar, which the order says will be 6 a.m. Pub Room owner Jay Sansone, who reportedly is severely ill, signed the order Oct.
